Myrtle Beach Downtown Alliance asks for community input on revitalization concepts
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - Myrtle Beach Downtown Alliance hosted a public input meeting on Tuesday for the community to have their say in the downtown’s future.
People dropped by and gave their two cents on what they wanted the city to look like.
“I think they’re doing a marvelous job so far,” said one man who stopped by.
MBDA said people’s input will help then improve the city in the long run.
“It’s part of our mission of creating a sense of place downtown,” said MBDA Chief Executive Officer, Jason Greene.
As community members trickled in, leaders got people to vote with stickers on what concepts they liked. These concepts ranged from font styles on street signs, color schemes and even an overall downtown theme they’d like to see.
“We’re hoping as folks come into the community input meeting that they see something they like, and they’ll comment about what they like and what they don’t like. In terms of these concepts of downtown architecture, streets designs, signage, wayfinding, branding, thematic options,” said Greene.
Leaders said this meeting is crucial for the city’s development.
“This is setting the stage for long-term growth in downtown,” said Greene.
After officials gather the input, Greene said the next steps will be to refine a design and present it to the community again in the Fall.
“We want to make sure we’re getting as much input as we can before we get into the design work,” said Greene.
Greene said this input is part of a long-term plan that will take several years to complete. MBDA said they want the community to be by their side through it all.
“Part of the process of redeveloping and revitalizing downtown is to start putting these pieces in play so we can accelerate the revitalizing and redevelopment of downtown,” said Greene.
Anyone who couldn’t make it out to Tuesday’s meeting, MBDA will have their last meeting for the spring on Thursday, May 2, from 3-7 p.m. at Ocean View Baptist Church, 7300 North Kings Highway.
