MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - Horry County Schools and the Myrtle Beach Classic are partnering to show students what it’s like to run a PGA TOUR event.

The two are teaming up for a hands-on learning day on Monday at the Dunes Beach and Golf Club.

Around 150 students from across all high schools in the district will participate and were selected based on what college major they’re considering.

Amanda Van Natta, Work Based Learning Specialist for Horry County Schools, said those majors include agriculture (specifically turf management), hospitality and marketing.

“The students and the teachers are very excited to get a little sneak peak into what makes this event roll,” said Van Natta. “But also to really explore those careers and see if any of those might interest our students, especially those that are graduating.”

Darren Nelson, Tournament Director for the Myrtle Beach Classic, also said students will have the opportunity to explore parts of the course including some of the first nine holes and the clubhouse.

“You’re always trying to find a way to tie in the local community, and especially kids to try to open up their eyes to some different areas of work they can get into when they get out of high school,” said Nelson.

While the learning day hasn’t taken place yet, Nelson said this is something he’d like to do again year after year

“I think so, I mean you’re gonna have different kids filtering through, students filtering through that are juniors and seniors so I think it’s definitely something we can build upon, and do across all the years we’re hosting the event here,” said Nelson.
