MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - Myrtle Beach Classic Tournament Director Darren Nelson says the tournament is about more than just golf.
A key part of PGA Tour events is also about making connections in the community.

“It’s a way for the players to really give back while they’re in town and really leave an impact, whether it’s on, you know, kids, or some other demographic of the public,” said Nelson.
The Myrtle Beach Classic is partnering with nine local charities, including the Boys and Girls Club of the Grand Strand ahead of next month’s tournament at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
“This is making history, they’ll be a part of history,” said Karen Vassell, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club of the Grand Strand.
Not only is the club getting $50,000, but the kids will get to shadow players and keep score during the tournament.
“That is a phenomenal opportunity for our students to get, once again, exposure to the game, access to it, and what better way to get that access than by professional golfers?” said Vassell.
Nelson said players will also participate in an event at PopStroke and a beach clean-up with their charity partners.
He said although there are many moving parts to the tournament, there’s nothing like seeing charities get involved.
“To me, that’s the most exciting part of the week,” said Nelson. “You know, the event with the Boys and Girls Club, to see those 15 or so kids that are going to be involved in that event...I mean, it’s always the kids, right? It really hits home with you.”
As of Tuesday, Nelson said over 34,000 tickets have been sold for the event, which takes place May 9-12.
