Myrtle Beach Classic exceeds tournament attendance goal

The first-ever PGA Tour event in the Golf Capital of the World far exceeded expectations.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – The first-ever PGA Tour event in the Golf Capital of the World far exceeded expectations.

Myrtle Beach Classic organizers told WMBF News a total of 41,783 people came to the tournament. It exceeds their goal of having 40,000 people come to the inaugural event.

“This high-profile sporting event not only enhances our area’s reputation as The Golf Capital of the World but also reinforces the strong community spirit that defines the Grand Strand. It’s been remarkable to see everyone, from local families and volunteers to visitors of all ages, come together to make this inaugural event a standout success,” said Karen Riordan, the president and CEO of Visit Myrtle Beach.

Darren Nelson, the tournament director, also praised the community and over 1,300 volunteers who contributed to the success for the tournament’s first year.

“With the continued dedication and support from the Myrtle Beach community, the event is poised to continue to grow and evolve, further spotlighting the Grand Strand as a premier destination for golf and recreation,” Nelson said.

On top of exceeding the attendance goal, the Myrtle Beach Classic also broke a PGA Tour record on Saturday.

Organizers said 15,281 spectators attended Round 3 of the Myrtle Beach Classic on Saturday which is the highest for a first-ever PGA Tour event.

Chris Gotterup was crowned the winner of the Myrtle Beach Classic on Sunday by finishing 22 under. It was also his first-ever PGA Tour win.

He took home a trophy, a specially made jacket, a $3.9 million purse along with 3009 FedExCup points
