MARION, S.C. (WMBF) - A pair of artists with local ties are looking to reflect the spirit of one Pee Dee county with their latest work.

Christine Crawford and Allison Dunavant with Girls Who Paint Murals are creating the work of art outside the Marion County Administration Building at its Fallen Hero Plaza.

Crawford and Dunavant, who are both Coastal Carolina University graduates, said they were asked to create something that reflected the spirit of the county and to honor first responders.

Dunavant explained they were contacted by the company that did the landscaping of the plaza and then created a digital design that was eventually approved, traced out and is being painted as of Thursday.

The mural, which is behind a flagpole, features images of a bald eagle, the American flag, the Statue of Liberty and silhouettes of first responders.

“I think it’s awesome,” said Crawford. “I think Marion County needed a mural to uplift the community. And usually murals just bring everyone together in general so I think everyone’s going to have a positive feedback in general.”

“It’s good to see more murals popping up,” added Dunavant. “I know one of the murals in Marion was just lost during the storm the other day, so I’m glad we can bring a mural back.”

Crawford and Dunavant also recently painted a mural in downtown Myrtle Beach.
