NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – Police K-9s from North Myrtle Beach and across the country are going to put their skills to the test on Saturday.

The North Myrtle Beach Police Department is hosting its first-ever “Leashes and Beaches” event.

“It’s an amazing experience. Police dogs, in general, everybody is curious about. They see what they see on TV, but now here’s your chance to see them right there in front of you,” said officer and K-9 handler Patrick Wilkinson with the North Myrtle Beach Police Department.

Wilkinson said there will be 20 dogs and their handlers from all over the country competing in obstacle and obedience courses.

“Everybody wants to see this kind of stuff. They want to see dogs jumping high, they want to see dogs running fast, they want to see police K-9s doing the biting and everything else,” Wilkinson said.

He added that the event is free to the public.

Money made from the registration of competitors and vendors, along with any donations made at the event, will go toward the North Myrtle Beach Police Foundation which helps support officers and their families.

The event goes from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex. Doors open at 10 a.m.

Those who go to the event are asked to not bring their pets because there will be opportunities to interact with the police K-9s.
