Florence man accused of trying to sexually assault, strangle victim

Investigators said a Florence man tried to sexually assault someone while he was armed with a gun.

FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – Investigators said a Florence man tried to sexually assault someone while he was armed with a gun.

The Florence County Sheriff’s Office arrested 36-year-old Howard Washington on Wednesday. He is charged with attempted murder, assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and financial transaction card theft.

Deputies were called around 3 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1 to South Jeffords Street for an assault.

An investigation revealed that while he was armed, Washington tried to sexually assault a victim and then tried to murder the person by strangling them. It caused the victim lose consciousness.

Washington is also accused of stealing the victim’s debit card and withdrew money from their account.

He is being held at the Florence County Detention Center under no bond.
