FLORENCE, S.C. (WMBF) - One person was killed after being hit by an Amtrak train passing through Florence early Wednesday, according to officials.

An Amtrak spokesperson told WMBF News that “a person obstructing the track came into contact with the train” just before 3:40 a.m. The train was traveling from New York to Miami.

Capt. Stephen Starling with the Florence Police Department later said officers responded around that time to the area of Pamplico Highway and Church Street regarding the crash. Starling added a male victim was found near where the train stopped and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The person hit by the train has not been identified.

Amtrak said none of the 162 passengers on board were hurt and that it was cooperating with local law enforcement.

The Florence County Coroner’s Office is investigating.
