‘I’m at my wit’s end’: Hit-and-run victim’s family frustrated with prosecutor’s handling of case

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - Nelson Green Jr.’s relatives remain frustrated with the justice system now nearly eight months after the early morning crash.

Solicitor Jimmy Richardson claims he made the call to change prosecutors over recent complaints, but has yet to publicly elaborate on that decision.

“I have taken that case, and given it to someone else. The biggest takeaway is that we want everybody to be comfortable,” Richardson said.

Richardson stated a new and third prosecutor is taking over Green’s case after he was made aware of complaints on Wednesday.

Authorities said 60-year-old Walter Hayes hit and killed Green on the night of May 18.

They said hours later Hayes returned to the scene to confirm the 30-year-old was dead, but Myrtle Beach police didn’t find him until more than a month later. Hayes faces hit-and-run involving death and reckless homicide charges.

Green’s ex-fiance, Maria Hoyte, said she’s appalled at how his case has been handled.

“It’s been hit, after hit,” Hoyte said. “So, let’s see if we can get hit again I guess. It’s becoming redundant, it’s becoming to be a pattern throughout this whole situation.”

Green’s family added, the NAACP will be assisting them with the case.

Hayes is headed back to court sometime next month for his next hearing.
