HGTC students learning the ropes, prepping the course for Myrtle Beach Classic
MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Some Horry Georgetown Technical College students are calling the golf course their classroom as they make sure it’s in pristine condition for the Myrtle Beach Classic.
HGTC students aspiring to become golf course superintendents and grounds managers are among hundreds of volunteers making sure the greens are in tip-top shape.
It’s all a part of HGTC’s Golf and Sports Turf management program, which gives students hands-on experience in the field.
It’s also the only program in the state dedicated to the care of turf grass.
Student Dillon Dupree is a freshman in the program and said some of his daily responsibilities include waking up early, mowing the grass and even hand-picking weeds.
He said the opportunity feels like a dream, and he’s excited for you to see their hard work.
“It’s mind-blowing,” Dupree said. “I’m just so thankful that I get to be a part of this. Many volunteers and spectators can come and see what we have been working on and the product that we’re trying to put out for the players and especially the fans.”
The program’s department chair and professor, Charles Granger, said his students work around five tournaments across the country each year, but this is their first time working one here in the Grand Strand.
He said making a golf course PGA-ready starts with the most basic details.
“There’s no job too big or too small,” Granger said. “We all come together as a team. Our job is to be able to showcase a piece of property, and for this week, it’s just a wonderful thing for us to be able to give to the community.”
Granger said there are around 40 students, including alumni, getting things ready for the Myrtle Beach Classic.
The Myrtle Beach Classic takes place May 9-12 at the Grand Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
