MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Wednesday morning, Ripley’s Aquarium celebrated six years of having its monthly Swim with the Rays event.

The event is designed to uplift and comfort veterans, primarily those suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

There are a total of 40 stingrays and leopard sharks in the tank.

Veterans can feed them in the shallow end, or snorkel with them in the deep end.

Alex Ossmann, Ripley’s Marketing Coordinator, said she’s honored that Ripley’s can provide therapy for the ones who need it most.

“Here in America, we would have nothing without our veterans and military personnel. So, it’s wonderful that Ripley’s was able to partner with the Myrtle Beach Veterans Group,” said Ossmann.

The event organizers said the purpose is for veterans to clear their minds, relax, and focus on the water.

Lou Kreiger, a PTSD Veteran group member, isn’t a first-time attendee. He said that’s why he knows this experience is worth it to gain the long-term effects.

“It seems like once you leave a job and retire those bad memories and things really start to kick in, and then you’re looking for some outlets to try and diminish those thoughts to get you thinking in a more positive fashion,” said Kreiger. “I’ve had people call me up and message me saying ya know for days and weeks after they’ve done the swim themselves, they couldn’t believe how helpful it was to them.”

Families of veterans can bring their families along to swim as well since PTSD can affect more than anyone.

Veterans not suffering from the disorder are welcome to take part in the experience.

Kreifer wants to stress to veterans how important it is to not suffer in silence.

“For the younger vets that are watching this, please go and get some help. When I was younger it was, oh I’m okay I’ll be alright. But I wasn’t alright. You have to recognize that you do have a problem and don’t be bashful.” said Kreiger.

Ripley’s Aquarium staff members said they are committed to serving those who’ve served our country.
