Upstate native from ‘The Color Purple’ nominated for Oscar
SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - Nominations for the 96th Academy Awards were revealed on Tuesday and one of those nominees happens to be from the Upstate.
Simpsonville native, Danielle Brooks, is nominated for her role as Sofia in the 2023 movie “The Color Purple”. She also played this character on Broadway during the 2015- 2017 revival of the stage musical.

Brooks recently took a trip home to Simpsonville, where she hosted a private screening of the movie and talked about how much the area meant to her.
The Oscars will take place on March 10, hosted for a fourth time by Jimmy Kimmel.
