‘I think they’re dead’: 911 call details the moments after deadly Florence Co. shooting
FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) - Two people are dead after a shooting early Friday in part of the Pee Dee.
Florence County Sheriff TJ Joye told WMBF News that deputies were called to Meadors Road at around 2 a.m.
In an update later Friday, investigators with the sheriff’s office said the two people shot were front and back seat passengers in a car driven by another person.
At some point on Meadors Road, the sheriff’s office said the front and back seat passengers got into an argument before the front seat passenger was shot multiple times by the back seat passenger.
The front-seat passenger then returned fire, striking the back-seat passenger once in the chest, according to investigators. Both died of gunshot wounds.
911 calls obtained by WMBF News detailed the moments after the shooting.
Dispatcher: “County 911. What’s the address of your emergency? I can’t hear you, ma’am, what’s your address?”
Caller: “I don’t know. I’m on the side of the road.”
Florence County sheriff said the witness and driver of the car escaped the gunfire.
“She exited the vehicle and ran away from the vehicle and then and then she heard more gunshots within the vehicle,” said Sheriff T.J. Joye.
During the 911 call, you can hear dispatchers working to calm the witness down.
Dispatcher: “I need you to take a deep breath and tell me what happened.”
Caller: “I don’t even know. I was driving. He turned around and shot (inaudible), I think they’re dead. I think they’re dead.”
The Florence County coroner identified the two killed in the shooting as 43-year-old Darryal Jerome Shaw, of North Augusta, S.C., and 42-year-old Demestric Dicks, of Winnsboro, S.C.
People who live along Meadors Road said they saw the aftermath.
“As I looked out the back window, you could see the blue lights, so you knew there were more coming. There were at least three or four that I saw go down there at a high rate of speed,” said resident Walt Turner.
The sheriff’s office added that a gun stolen out of New York was also recovered at the scene, which left some neighbors on high alert.
“I keep the doors locked, got a cell phone close by,” said Turner.
Authorities said the driver of the car was not hurt and has cooperated in the investigation. No charges are anticipated at this time.
The coroner said autopsies are scheduled at MUSC on Monday.
An investigation is ongoing.
