SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Hundreds of bikers are hitting the road for the 13th annual Crude’s Veteran Ride.

The event started as a way for friends to get together during bike week, but as more people started to join, they started to ride for a reason.

Now, more than 100 bikers get together each year to raise money for Home For Our Troops.

The nonprofit builds custom houses for post-9/11 veterans.

Event founder Keven Gumina said last year, they raised around $3,000, and there is no better feeling than seeing how big the event has grown.

“It’s awesome,” Gumina said. “I wish I could take a selfie while I’m riding down the road with all these bikes behind you because you can see lights as far as the eye can see. It gives me goosebumps knowing that I have all these people behind me helping support the same things that I want to support.”

This year, bikers will get a police escort as they take off from the Golden Egg in Surfside Beach at around 10 a.m. and cruise 150 miles to Moncks Corner, where they’ll stop for lunch at Gilligan’s on the Dock.

It’s free to participate, but anyone can come out and buy a t-shirt to help raise money.

The bikers will end their day at Garden City Beach Bar with some door prizes and raffles.
